Getting new keys
If you have lost your car keys, chances are you are going to have to replace them. But what are your options and how do you go about it? Here are all of the answers for you…
Claiming on insurance
If your keys are lost or stolen, you may be able to claim for them under your car insurance policy. It sometimes comes as standard as part of your insurance policy, and on others, it may be an optional extra. It is worth checking the kid of cover you have and if you will have any excess to pay in the event of loss or theft.
Lost key cover
Lost key cover is a type of policy that stands outside of your regular insurance cover. With some of these policies, there are more benefits than your standard key replacement, such as being given a hire car for the time you are locked outside of your own car. If you are going to opt for this kind of cover, it is always worth checking the terms and conditions to see if there any catches or clauses on how long the keys have to be lost for.
Purchasing a new set of keys is always an option. You will have to approach the manufacturer directly and be aware that this is a costly option. They typically cost around £200 for a set, but this will of course depend on your make and model. Programming and re-coding of the keys is an expensive procedure, hence the cost.
If you do have one set of keys, you can go to a key cutter and get another set cut. Do your research and make sure you go to someone reputable. You will need to take identification and your V5 with you to prove you are the owner of the car.
